A review of Melbourne from a residents view
Well it’s been two or so years since i moved to Melbourne so i think it deserves a review. I’ll be going over a few things which are important to anyone thinking about moving here or staying here for a brief period of time. Hopefully my review helps you in some way and makes your transition a comfortable one.
Melbourne have a perfect public transport system called MetLink which makes one card / ticket / myki work on all forms of public transport such as buses, trains & trams. Trains & Trams usually operate up until 1:00AM and then resume at about 5:00AM, whilst buses have a Night Rider service which allows you to keep home at really late hours of the night, great for those of you who are party goers.
Metlink have a fantastic online site which allows you to plan your trips with in-depth times, maps and other tools to help make your use of public transport easier.
When coming to Melbourne i think your best plan of attack is going straight to Flinders Street station or drive directly into the city. From there walk to your nearest coffee shop (trust me there are lots) grab a coffee and walk everywhere. Now this method will not find you everything there is in to see in Melbourne, it’s been two years and i’m still finding secret little gems in and around Melbourne. That’s another thing, i’ve seen no other place that hides little gems, perfect restaurants or clubs hidden away in little alleys or behind huge buildings. It’s like a secret little game Melbourne plays to keep out the tourists, and it works.
The picture explains what your typical Friday night out in the city will bring toward you. I know the sight of police is not the best photo to use, but i’m thinking it actually is. Melbourne clubbing usually has you out until about 3:30am, whilst your walking back to your place of lodging you’ve got other people doing the same. This causes problems due to people being drunk and fights happen.
Police in Melbourne are always there, and it’s not a buzz kill. It’s probably the only place i’ve seen that looks after, keeps healthy and promotes it’s nightlife.
There are so many different clubs and bars in Melbourne it would be near impossible to list them all. These clubs all vary from theme to genre of music being played, it’s like a theme park for adults, they all look big and exciting, you pay the entry fee, go for a ride and then leave the front gate whilst spewing uncontrollably.
Melbourne is know to be Australias fine food capital with it’s huge selection of cafes, patisseries and restaurants. There is a huge cultral population within Melbourne which really opens up alot of different cuisenes!
There are lots of different places to get food in Melbourne, more than any other place i’ve lived in before. I’m not going to directly reference any places as it’s probably best you google yourself a place which meets your needs perfectly.
Just off one of the many laneways in Chinatown sits an unexpected dumpling and noodle house spectacular. There are no streamers or disco balls to herald the excitement, but take a chance on this unpretentious eatery and you’ll be rewarded with cheap and generous servings of wonderful dumplings. The menu offers a broad variety of dishes, both sweet and savoury, as well as some vegetarian meals with faux-meats such as vegie ‘ham’ and vegie ‘duck’. Tight budgets are not a problem here with meals priced around the $7 mark and served with complimentary Chinese tea.

Well that brings this post to an end as i said before, there is no way you can possibly judge your experience some where based entirely on someones review. I’ve given you the building blocks to help you climb the adventure that is Melbourne.

Hey dude! Awesome layout of the site! Added you to the blogroll btw
You need a guest book haha. At least then I wouldn’t have to leave unrelated comments on your blog posts.
What a fantastic city!
I know more about Melbourn after reading your review
Thank you.
I’m a huge fan of Melbourne and have visited on more than one occasion. In addition to some great attractions, good people and great weather its also has one of the worlds largest geo-caching communities. Depending on what you know about GPS technology its something you might want to give a try. To be frank, I’m pretty lazy and do it from the comfort of my car so dont be intimidated thinking you have to hike, bike or run everywhere. If you’re interested you can learn a little more about GPS tracking and technology at http://www.gpsinsight.com.
I’ve been to melbourne a couple of times. Went hiking, and biking, did alot of walking with my girlfriend. I wish I would have read about this before our trip to melbourne it would have made life so much easier!
