Berlin is one of my favorite places to visit, it’s laxed views of what the norm is and the way it always finds a way to be accidentally different.

The streets are colored with graffiti and art installations, corners and alley ways are converted into squatter havens. These people sell their wares, trinkets and other things which will allow them to eat, drink take drugs and be happy.

There’s a place called Tocheles which only about a year ago was filled with squatters, I met a man who was living and selling his art and music from a shipping container located at the back of Tocheles, he told me a vast majority of people there stole electricity and had no papers or visa. He told me he’d been living there for years.

Tocheles is frequented by tourists coming to see this place so covered in graffiti and art it’s near impossible to find a gap within an inch that doesn’t have some form of art on it.

These tourists come through and muster up the balls to hang out and around these people who inhabit to Tocheles, back home if they were to come across these types of people they’d be classed as homeless or a beggar. At Tocheles though these people are walking exhibits of talent and intelligence, it’s just Tocheles allows them to stand in the light and out of the dark.

As a tourist, it was a theme park for the broken, you enter the doors, take the ride and then leave. Taking with you a few happy snaps and moments caught.

I’ve visited this same place today, and it appears about eighty percent of the squatters were evicted, and large green fences block the fields were they used to reside. Only the successful stayed, the people who didn’t need that as much as the others.

It was pretty disappointing that I wasn’t able to meet my old friend from the shipping container, it was literally the first thing I did when I got to Berlin, I went looking for him.

Where ever he is today, I hope he’s doing alright.

This place is not what it used to be, but I’m very glad I got to see it in its true form that year ago.

As part of my journalistic duties i logged down and decided to share all the information i found over the last two days regarding this incident.

I’ve travelled around the world alot recently, two times to Europe, once to Japan, four times to Indonesia and a few other places here and there. Due to the fact i’m about to set off on my next trip over to Europe, i’ve decided / felt motivated to share my tips on how to find the cheapest yet efficient hostels around Europe / Around the world.

REVIEWS

Using sites like TripAdvisor.com in order to see the reviews set by people for certain hostels should always come before anything else.  TripAdvisor on average has 30+ reviews for any given establishment and usually they’re extremely informative.

RATINGS

Once again ratings are important also and these can also be found by doing searches on TripAdvisor or on many of the various Hostel booking search engines. This step should come second to checking out the reviews.

PRICE

Right, so yes you’re backpacking and it’s all about counting every dime and making sure you’re all set to go for the next destination. If you’re looking at most hostels you’ll notice they’ve got various rates for different rooms. These differ greatly depending on how many beds are in the room/dorm. For example a dorm with 16 beds usually averages at about $10-$25. And the 2-4 bed dorms will usually go at a rate of $28-$30.

BIG DORMS AND LOTS OF BEDS

When i first thought of the fact i’d be sleeping in a room with 16 other people it freaked me out entirely and my first travel to Europe consisted of sleeping in small non-populated dorms.

Recently i just overcame my fear and started staying in 6+ bed dorms and started to realise the more people in the dorm the better it is. Yes it’s going to be noisy, this is entirely beatable simply by sleeping with your headphones in using an application such as beach sounds, or an mp3 with rain or what ever you’d fancy to noise cancel. *Ear plugs do ok*..

Overtime i came out of my shell and made friends with nearly everyone in my dorm, each night we’d all plan what we would go and see / do the next day. One example was when i was in Japan and we all woke up at 4AM and went to the local fish markets to see an auction take place. We all split the cab and had a massive breakfast / dinner and the nights after that consisted of us going out into the town and having great nights.

It 100% made my trip as i was travelling alone and ever since then I’ve always chosen to get amongst the people and make some new friends, you’ve just got to overcome that sense of crowdiness!

HOSTEL BOOKING SITES

There are multiple sites to choose from, the main two sites i’ll refer you to are HostelBookers and HostelWorld these two sites compete against each other very aggressively. HostelBookers is the cheaper of the two claiming to be 8.7% cheaper than any given rate from Hostel World.

At the end of the day these sites take a 10% charge from your overall booking and give the rest to your designated hostel upon your arrival.

To cut out this middle man and get the most possible cheapest rate, you should always check out the hostels own website and see if they offer a booking service. If they do it’s more than likely going to be CHEAPER then any other hostel booking site.

WIFI, YES YOU NEED IT!

When looking for your hostel, always keep in mind if it in fact overs WiFi services. This when travelling is always an important thing, as this is the day of Facebook, internet banking and all of that other fun stuff.

Most hostels offer WiFi for free and some charge usually around $7ish.

SUMMARY

When looking for your hostels, don’t skim over the important stuff, you’ve got the time.. Go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Most importantly, read as many reviews as possible, and that’s about it… Hope you found this useful.

As of recent i’ve not been updating the site, and i’ve started to think i’m being alot more slack than usual.

Well guys this would come across as a bit of an unusual post from myself, but it’s some what needed.

It’s good every now and then to see actors in their semi-raw form, semi-unscripted and live, it pretty much gives us a chance to see them in a way which they can’t fully control. The main issue i had with the globes which i didn’t think i would was the fact Ricky Gervais was flat.

I had huge expectations that he’d blow it all away again, but this time round he kept it pretty low brow and it would appear he was pretty restricted although he tried to appear un tethered.
